About the work
Whorl is a one-of-a-kind sculptural vessel by Juliana Hattu-Dorpmans, made in white stoneware and saggar-fired. Rising from a narrow base, its broad, asymmetrical body opens into an irregular mouth. The silhouette changes noticeably between views as prominent folds and ridges travel around the form.
Fine, closely spaced marks follow swirling and diagonal paths between raised bands and deep, rounded recesses. Cream, peach and warm terracotta tones meet smoke-grey and charcoal markings across its textured surface. Each side reveals a different arrangement of relief, line and colour.
